What is a BX Soil Carbon Project?
The BX Soil Carbon Project pays you to adopt eco-friendly practices on your farm that capture and store carbon in your soil.
Why Start a Soil Carbon Credit Project?
Earn extra income through carbon credits, while making your land healthier and more resilient. Store carbon in your soil to reduce your farm’s carbon footprint. Healthier soil can increase crop yields, help your soil withstand floods and droughts, and reduce reliance on sprays and other inputs.
The Step-by-Step Process of a Soil Carbon Project
1. Farm Details and Data Collection
Estimate your potential earnings with the BX Platform calculator. Provide “business as usual” data on the BX Platform, including current farming practices, historical land use, soil tests, yields, and fertiliser use over the past 5 years.
2. Data Analysis and Soil Carbon Management Plan
BX analyses your data to find practices that will store the most carbon on your farm. BX will send you a Soil Carbon Management Plan tailored to your farm. Choose the recommended practices that work best for your farm. BX doesn’t mandate specific practices.
3. Contract Signing
Agree to the project’s terms and conditions. You agree to keep these practices in place for 20 years, maximizing your returns and meeting requirements.
4. Practice Implementation
Put your chosen sustainable practices into action. These may include cover cropping, reduced or no-tillage, recycling organic matter, agroforestry (planting trees and shrubs), and livestock management and grazing.
5. Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV)
Use the BX Platform to log evidence of implemented practices. BX will coordinate external soil carbon sampling, likely every 5 years.
6. Payment Process
BX develops and sells the carbon credits on the voluntary carbon market. You’ll receive a portion of the profits, with an expected payment of $10-50 per acre per year.
Credits Development & Ownership
BX handles the development, ownership, and sale of all carbon credits. All credits are registered with Verra, using their approved VM0042 Methodology for Improved Agricultural Land Management (IALM). For more information, visit the Knowledge Hub.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is the initial cost to get started?
The cost depends on the practices you choose and your region. BX provides a custom plan, so you’ll have time to assess costs. Most practices offer a positive return over time.
How is carbon sequestration measured?
Soil samples are taken at 30 cm or deeper. Sampling locations are chosen to represent your farm accurately, based on factors like terrain, soil type, and land use.
What happens if a farmer cannot maintain practices for 20 years?
BX maintains a buffer pool that allows for some flexibility, but major deviations could result in repayment of revenue.
Can the land be used for other purposes during the contract period?
During the contract, keep the land use the same in project areas. Changing it could reduce stored carbon, meaning you may need to repay past revenues or miss out on future earnings. Discuss any changes with the BX team first by contacting farmers@bx.tech.
