A Guide to Biochar

Introduction: What is a BX Biochar Project?

What is a BX Biochar Project?

BX helps turn your farm’s waste wood into biochar. We chip and haul the wood, process it, and pay you for it. We also create carbon credits from this process, which BX manages.

Biochar is a special form of charcoal created by heating wood without oxygen. This locks away carbon for hundreds of years, and the biochar can be used in soil or road construction.

Why Start a Biochar Project?

Get Paid – Earn up to $350 per acre for woody waste you’d otherwise pay to get rid of.

Minimal Changes – You don’t need to change much about your current farming practices.

Joining a biochar project means extra income and helping the environment. Each ton of biochar locks in carbon for hundreds of years, supporting efforts to reduce climate change.

Getting Started

You’ll do everything in the BX Platform, and we’ll guide you every step of the way.

Complete the Biochar Questionnaire on the BX Platform to get started. We’ll reach out to discuss your project once you’re done.

Share your yields for the blocks where the waste wood is located.

Schedule a convenient time for wood chipping and hauling through the BX Platform.

Land Use – Confirm that the land from which the waste wood was removed will stay in use for its current purpose, like growing fruit.

Preparing Your Wood for Biochar Production

Gather Your Waste Wood – Arrange the woody biomass, such as waste trees or wood, in rows or a single pile to make chipping easy.

Avoid Contaminants – Make sure no wiring, trellising, metal, or other non-wood materials are mixed in.

Record Acres Cleared – Document the number of acres where wood was removed.

Access for Machinery – Make sure there’s enough space for large machinery to reach the wood pile.

What Happens Once My Wood Is Accepted?

Contract Signing

The first thing you’ll do is sign a contract for us to collect your wood. Agree on the terms, conditions, and the price BX will pay for the woody biomass.

Chipping and Hauling

The BX team will come on the scheduled date to chip and haul the woody biomass. If you prefer to chip the wood yourself, coordinate with BX.

Track the project’s progress on the BX Platform.

Payment

How and When You’ll Get Paid

Get Paid Fast – You’ll receive revenue within 30 days after biochar creation.

Expected Payment – About $14 per ton of woody waste processed.

Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV)

Ongoing Monitoring

Your farm will need to maintain fruit-growing practices as part of the carbon credits process.

BX covers all costs and manages the audit schedule. BX also handles all development, ownership, and sales of the carbon credits.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What types of wood can be used to produce biochar credits?

Only woody biomass from your farming operation qualifies. This includes waste wood from pruned trees, removed orchards, or similar wood waste. Non-woody materials, like straw or fruit, are not accepted.

How long does a biochar project take?

Projects run for a minimum of 6 months, covering data collection, chipping, biochar production, and life cycle analysis. Audits can occur up to 5 years after the project begins.

What happens to the biochar?

The biochar goes to soil amendments, road building, and other uses. It isn’t returned to the farm or placed back where the waste wood originated.

Where do I start?

Log into your account on the BX Platform, assess potential earnings, and complete the biochar questionnaire to get started.
